TULSA, Okla. — John 3:16 Mission has announced a major expansion in northwest Tulsa.

During a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Steve Whitaker, Senior Pastor and CEO of John 3:16 said it’s the largest expansion in 70 years of service that they’re beyond excited to move forward with. Whitaker said it will not only help support more people who are homeless, but it will also help expand their life rehabilitation services.

During the announcement, Mayor GT Bynum said the expansion will improve Tulsa’s effort to help the homeless.

Whitaker said the budget for the project will cost about $8.3 million. The Mission’s capital campaign has raised the money from the Tulsa community over the past years.

Whitaker said the expansion includes several elements including the renovation of the main 42,000 square foot school that John 3:16 acquired back in 2013. The former school will be able to house up to 80 men and will be used as a men’s long-term, residential recovery program.

Whitaker says they are also looking forward to a new 10,000 square foot building that will be built next to the former school building that will be used for a women’s recovery center, a 15,000 square foot work training center and a 25,000 square foot redistribution center to help process and store donations.

Whitaker said he hopes the full project will be completed in the next two to three years where they can start making a big difference in the Tulsa community. He added, “It’s a culmination of a dream that’s been going on over a decade as we’ve dreamed and hoped for being able to expand to help more homeless people.”
